An asthmatic attack 12 years ago triggered Shammi Nanda’s journey into wellness and healing with food. He shares his incredible journey connecting the food we eat, with the way we communicate. Since then he has been working tirelessly to raise awareness about conscious cooking, which delves into how cooking methods, ingredients, and styles improve nutritive value of the food.
His healing journey made him look at impact of the toxic nature of negative emotions. Despite healthy food and regular yoga he would still get wheezing or symptoms of Asthma. He realized that any stressful situation would trigger asthma. He discovered NVC (Non Violent Communication) as a way of engaging with challenging emotional situations in day-to-day life. As he eliminated stress through NVC his asthma got cured. He dreams and believes in a world where we can have a wholesome life, which is free of suffering and enjoys sharing NVC to whoever is curious about it.

Update [13th May, 2013]
The talk was very enriching and made everyone raise questions on many parts of their life. Shammi Nanda threw light on what is organic farming and how it is different from chemical farming? He shared that it was mainly after World War II that the chemical farming grew exponentially. After the war got over, those company which used to make dangerous chemicals for the warfare supplied the same chemicals to the farmers. As soon as you put urea into the soil it becomes acidic and kills all the organisms in it. Organic farming is totally chemical free. Less chemical is not organic food. Farming has to be part of the Nature’s cycle of composing and decomposing the produce. The leaf that falls from the tree is eaten by the organisms in the soil and turned into manure which the trees use to grow.
Further in the talk, Shammi discussed how we all can live a healthy life. The simple solution that he offered was that we must all start to be more mindful about what we eat. If we want to be cured by deceases we have to question the environment we live in and allow healing to take its time. Healing, he says, is a journey. We all have to question our life style and find out the reason we are are like that. To start this journey towards healthy and mindful living, Shammi suggested to take few baby steps. He asked people to eat more of fruits. We should increase the quantity of salad, nuts and sprouts in our daily diet. Instead of oil we can use oil seeds and vegetables can be streamed.
To explore other aspects of Shammi’s personality, the discussion turned to his experiences of attending and taking non violence communication workshops. This turned out to be the most interesting and interactive seesion. People questioned him on various ways they can imbibe non violence in their fast and restless life and have healthy relationships with their loved ones. Shammi tried to answer most of the queries calmly. He suggested people that whenever they receive a reaction from people which they didn’t expect they should take a moment to think of the person’s actual need. Instant reactions may not be right all the time. Listening to the other person completely is very important.
